Program overview

The Dr. Gary J. Becker Young Investigator Award promotes excellence in academic research for members early in their careers. This award honors the founding editor of the Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology (JVIR) and recognizes the importance of the young investigator in developing interventional solutions for the future.

In 1990, SIR Foundation established the Dr. Gary J. Becker Young Investigator Award as a way to recognize promising young practitioners of interventional medicine early in their careers and encourage their pursuit of academic careers. Each year, the author of the most outstanding clinical science research paper submitted receives this distinguished award.

Eligibility

The primary author must be within 7 years of completion of fellowship in Interventional Radiology. No higher rank than an assistant professor or associate professor. The principal investigator and the abstract must be original (previously unpresented). At the time of online abstract submission, the nominee must designate their eligibility for the award.
A completed scientific manuscript must be published in the last year or is being considered for publication. The manuscript does not have to be submitted to JVIR for consideration, however, applications with JVIR submitted manuscripts will be more competitive during the review process.
The applicant must be a SIR member in good standing

Award

The recipient will receive a $3,000 honorarium as well as complimentary registration, transportation and lodging at the SIR Annual Scientific Meeting. The award will be presented during the SIR Foundation Awards Ceremony at the SIR Annual Scientific Meeting.

2024 Dr. Gary J. Becker Young Investigator Award: Dania Daye, MD, PhD

Dania Daye, MD, PhD is interventional radiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and an assistant professor of radiology at Harvard Medical School. She is co-director of IR Research at MGH, and Director of the Precision Interventional and Medical Imaging (PIMI) Lab. Her research centers around the applications of machine learning and computer vision for precision medicine.

To date, her research has resulted in a number of patents, more than 85 peer-reviewed publications, and numerous presentations and invited talks at both national and international meetings. For her research, Dr. Daye is the recipient of many awards that include the Association of American Physicians Stanley J. Korsmeyer Young Investigator Award, the Association of University Radiologists (AUR) Memorial Award, the 40 under 40 MedTech Boston Healthcare Innovators award and the J. George Teplick Memorial Award. She was previously elected as a junior fellow of the International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM). Dr. Daye previously served as the President of the American Physician Scientists Association and currently serves on the board of directors. For her local and national leadership roles, Dr. Daye was the recipient of the American Medical Association (AMA) Foundation Leadership Award.

Dr. Daye is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania MD-PhD program. She completed her PhD in Bioengineering as an HHMI-NIBIB Interfaces scholar in imaging sciences. Dr. Daye was previously selected as a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Gilliam fellow and as a Paul and Daisy Soros fellow.
