The Leaders in Innovation Award recognizes and promotes innovation within interventional radiology, continuing IR’s historical innovative development that has revolutionized medicine over the last 40 years. The award acknowledges individuals who have conceptualized and implemented an idea that has had an advantageous impact on the practice of interventional radiology. The innovation can be a device, technique, approach, clinical practice model or anything having a significant improvement upon the quality of patient care or economics of interventional practice.

The 2018 Leaders in Innovation Award recipient is Dr. Thomas McNamara. Dr. McNamara has pioneered techniques used for the investigation and treatment of peripheral vascular disease, developed thrombolysis treatments for blood clots, and led the development of innovative medical devices. He was among the first interventional radiologists to develop a clinical practice, paving the way for future participation of interventional radiology in overall patient management. The entire field of interventional radiology owes him a great deal of gratitude for his innovative work.
