Jeanne M. LaBerge, MD, FSIR
University of California San Francisco
Jeanne M. LaBerge, MD, FSIR, is known throughout the community for her interest in education and training, as well as for her clinical interests in portal hypertension and hepatobiliary IR. That, according to SIR President James F. Benenati, MD, FSIR, is part of why he selected Dr. LaBerge to be the 27th Annual Dr. Charles T. Dotter Lecturer. "Jeanne is recognized internationally as a great teacher and as a developer of educational ideas, tools and methods," said Dr. Benenati, "She has worked diligently throughout her career in this area."
After receiving her medical degree from the University of Utah School of Medicine in 1980, Dr. LaBerge completed a radiology residency and angiography/interventional radiology fellowship program at University of California Moffitt Hospital.
From 1985-1989, she served as chief of interventional radiology at the Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii; she also served as assistant clinical professor in the University of Hawaii. She then moved to the University of California San Francisco (UCSF), where, in the coming years, she served as assistant professor in residence, director of the Radiology Learning Center, and associate professor in residence. She is widely regarded for being a clinician researcher and teacher for more than 20 years at UCSF, one of the leading biomedical research institutions.
Dr. LaBerge has made significant contributions to the literature in her career, having authored or coauthored 135 peer-reviewed journal articles. She has also been a reviewer for numerous journals including the Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology, American Journal of Roentgenology, Radiology, and Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology. Recently, Dr. LaBerge has assumed several prominent roles within radiology leadership, such as her selection to the American Board of Radiology board of trustees and was recently selected as a member of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Residency Review Committee for Diagnostic Radiology. Her major contributions within Society leadership has been in the development of the original syllabus series, the categorical course case-based review series and the annual film panel; she was chair of the 2008 SIR Annual Scientific Meeting. Dr. LaBerge is also a member of the SIR Foundation board of directors and is chair of the Foundation's Data Integration Division.
She has received tremendous recognition, including a Distinction in Teaching Award, Hideyo Minagi Outstanding Teacher Award, and the Sudikow Award for Clinical Impact from UCSF. She received a Distinguished Service Award from the American Board of Radiology in 2002 and, in 2003, received SIR's Distinguished Service Award for establishing the SIR annual film panel. She received both a Commendation Medal and a Meritorious Service Award from the U.S. Army for her years of active duty.
Each year, the current SIR president selects a Dotter Lecturer who he feels exemplifies the qualities of an IR leader. According to Dr. Benenati, there were actually many reasons he selected Dr. LaBerge for this honor. "She is a talented, brilliant interventionalist who is a warm and compassionate person," he said. "She brings out the best in everyone. She leads by example, and her example is to accept nothing short of excellence."
The title of Dr. LaBerge's 27th Annual Dr. Charles T. Dotter Lecture is "Data Integration in IR-A Pressing Challenge for Our Time."
