2008 Dr. Charles T. Dotter Lecturer

Jim A. Reekers, MD
Academic Medical Center of Amsterdam

The 2008 Charles T. Dotter Lecture will be given by one of interventional radiolology's most active and interesting physicians. Currently the President of the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology Society of Europe (CIRSE), Jim A. Reekers, MD, is able to present scientific lectures in four languages. He has published 90 peer-reviewed papers on interventional radiology and over 30 book chapters, and has given over 250 invited lectures.

Dr. Reekers has been honored for his contributions to the field with awards such as the European Congress of Radiology's Medal for Presentation and the Door Society of Academic Radiology's Stauffer Award. Among the societies of which he is a member are the Dutch Society of Radiology, the European Society of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, the Society of Interventional Radiology and the Dutch Society of Interventional Radiology.

David Sacks, MD, SIR President, said of Reekers, "He is committed to the creation and practice of evidence-based medicine" and was the principle investigator of the Dutch randomized trial to compare uterine artery embolization with hysterectomy. He recently gave the honorary lecture at the Olbert Symposium in Salzburg, Austria on "The Emperor's New Clothes" describing the problems with assuming the effectiveness of many endovascular techniques in the absence of supporting evidence.

A champion of expanding educational opportunities in IR through the CIRSE Foundation's programs in countries at the early stages of practice, Dr. Reekers is working to create a European curriculum for training in IR so that all practitioners of image-guided minimally invasive procedures will have the same level of expertise.

In a recent interview with The Interventionalist, Reekers stated that he strives "to turn CIRSE into the first 'green' medical society in Europe." As president of CIRSE, Dr. Reekers is making environmental responsibility a priority. Said Sacks, "He is committed to finding ways to reduce the impact of CIRSE activities on the production of greenhouses gases."

Dr. Reekers is currently a professor of radiology and interventional radiology at the Academic Medical Center in the University of Amsterdam's Radiology Department.

In 1984, the Dr. Charles T. Dotter Lecturer was initiated as an annual lecture in honor of one of the early pioneers in interventional radiology. Each year this honor is extended to an accomplished and exceptional interventional radiologist for their extraordinary career achievement and contributions to the specialty.
