Goals of the SIR Foundation Discovery Campaign
As minimally invasive medicine continues to grow
and move into new areas of discovery, a strengthened research
commitment will ensure that IR physicians are in the forefront of
patient care. SIR Foundations Discovery Campaign will:
Enhance SIR Foundations role in the
overall SIR Strategic Plan by advancing IR Research and
Education initiatives.
Capitalize on the Foundations
growing recognition, momentum and impact on the IR
specialty.
Expand current research programs and
solidify our future via significant membership
investment.
Expand the Foundations asset base
to perpetuate investments in research and innovation.
Enhance stronger relationships and
collaboration with industry. By conducting an initial
phase from among leading SIR members, to demonstrate at
the outset of the campaign to Industry Partners and
National Foundations, our collective commitment to
IRs future.
Campaign Program Objectives
The Societys leadership recognizes that providing funds
for research project support is important for the continued
development of IR and IR leaders. At the same time, the medical
landscape continues to change. Contemporary interventional
medicine is on the front line of standard patient care, and IRs
must play a prominent role in guiding the development of current
and future interventional procedures. To that end, the Discovery
Campaign will expand SIR Foundation's program focus to include:
Clinical Trial and Registry Development
- The SIR Foundation is committed to fostering clinical
researchers and increasing IR involvement in clinical
research and registry development.
- The SIR Foundation must be in a position to support the
development of clinical researchers and to provide
resources for the development of clinical research
protocols that answer the questions important to both
medical professionals and consumers.
- The Campaign will enable the Foundation to advance our
understanding of the treatment of cancer, stroke,
peripheral vascular disease and other conditions of
importance to the field of interventional radiology by
identifying key gaps in our knowledge and suggesting
research approaches to fill those gaps.
Research Grants
- Despite its commitment to promote research among IR
professionals, the Foundation has only been able to fund
a portion of the many meritorious requests it has
received for research grants over the past five years. As
a result, SIR Foundations Board has set a strategic
goal of doubling its ongoing investment in
investigator-initiated research grants to $250,000
annually by 2009.
- This investment will pay significant dividends in the
advancement of the IR specialty, providing additional
support for current research, fostering a new generation
of leaders, as well as a new initiative to fund
innovative research proposals.
Education and Innovation Fund
- The Education and Innovation Fund will help the
Foundation immediately explore new opportunities to
advance the specialty and reduce the barriers for
participation in research.
- To be ready in this regard, the Foundation
must secure the resources necessary to invest at least
$250,000 annually.
Annual Fund
- To ensure that IR professionals are poised to be pioneers
and leaders in the future, SIR Foundation must have a
predictable source of unrestricted funds.
- Contributions to Annual Fund are vital to the survival
and continued operation of SIR Foundation because SIR
membership dues do not cover the operation of the
Foundation.
- The Discovery Campaign is intended to amplify the success
of the Annual Fund, and all SIR members are strongly
encouraged to make both the Discovery Campaign and the
Annual Fund part of their giving strategy.
- A key strategic goal of the Campaign is to raise the
level of annual unrestricted support from the general SIR
membership by 5% annually, so that the Foundations
capacity grows and develops over the next 3-5 years.
